<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I recycle most of my clothes. After they are no longer decent I wear them around the house and then use them for a number of uses but mainly for rag rugs. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Jeans follow the same life up to a point. I find it hard to reuse them. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The technique I found here: <a href="http://www.curbly.com/16254-make-it-modern-diy-circular-rope-rug?search_id=9765967" target="_blank">www.curbly.com</a> works and produces rough rugs I am using in the bathroom.</div>

For the core I have used the cheap synthetic clothes line cord they sell in the pound shops.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
I have cut strips of the jeans and wrapped them around the cord. I found it easier to do the wrapping before starting to stitch. I have used pins to keep the wraps in place and used a long straight stitch to block the jean strips to the inner cord.<br />

I have then used a zigzag stitch to join them in the round.<br />

I have one small rug and a bigger one made of 3 circles.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9217654172292557635.post-50525039413105992512015-08-19T12:46:00.000+01:002017-07-06T12:52:55.952+01:00Crocheted baskets<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<blockquote class="tr_bq" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
It is possible to crochet and in-globe another material. I have done so in: <a href="https://bioccolo.blogspot.co.uk/2014/08/tissue-paper-basket.html" target="_blank">Tissue paper basket</a>.</blockquote>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
For this basket I begun by crocheting flat to make a base and then I started crocheting in the round. I only use the basic crochet stitch. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I have staggered the strands of raffia. This helps keeping the diameter of the basket even. Most often you need only add one strand at the time to the bundle that is being tied to the spiral.</div>

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">These are made using the paper that amazon uses to pad their products. They are long sections of recycled paper they have ripping dots at regular intervals and I always feel bad throwing them away. I usually fold them and keep them. They can be useful if you move house and need to wrap your glass and crockery but for a while I could not find much use for the paper.<br />I then saw a picture showing baskets made of paper strips that had been stitched together. </span><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiD5TTTJZXajcZ5kBedWHbprSmYJjbx04ajBhUn3W1W6joIw61IcdEdQTlD7Z_ebdE1Ozljpg_KEPjd43TKdVb7dkTuYdAmGBmf69kxY7_zlQr0U84_-HtGpYS0H_lvS4TGQtkwNLiKXFs/s1600/20150730_174248.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="woven paper baskets" border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiD5TTTJZXajcZ5kBedWHbprSmYJjbx04ajBhUn3W1W6joIw61IcdEdQTlD7Z_ebdE1Ozljpg_KEPjd43TKdVb7dkTuYdAmGBmf69kxY7_zlQr0U84_-HtGpYS0H_lvS4TGQtkwNLiKXFs/s320/20150730_174248.jpg" title="woven paper baskets" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">This is how I have interpreted the concept. </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">I calculated how long each strip had to be to make decent sized baskets. I found that I had enough for a large one and a small one. I have ripped the paper at the length required. </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">I have folded the paper lengthwise twice and stitched it along the edge.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">I have wanted to try double weave since the day I purchased my loom. I even bought a double weave ebook from Interweave Press...</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">It took a while but </span><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">I have finally warped the loom with some dark and light gray commercial whool. I wanted it to be a test run. Following the advice in the Interweave book </span><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">I added a fishing line at the fold but that seemed to help me creating loops rather than avoid draw-in.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Considering that my edges rarely draw-in and that my usual shortcoming is the creation of loops I have removed the line and kept going.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">I was still half way through when I received a commission and decided to remove early the experiment to complete my commission as quickly as possible.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">The resulting fabric was only about 1 m long but I have been able to use some of it to make a sleeve to protect my boyfriend's computer.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">The fabric at the fold is a bit tighter than the rest of the weave but not as bad as I feared.</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhwmBnOTsrsrAmBqJdfALO0ErdqC8YI5X_0PhFv5RjCnbOpM9seexv-tzSl9g-z8YgA2LeC-qbDpwMYn1Rn-WfI2xhj7friFaPPjTnCVffmp2O3Uiu3fBm4d4bzUkyg_Taw2LOOfSD1Des/s1600/20141207_232851.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhwmBnOTsrsrAmBqJdfALO0ErdqC8YI5X_0PhFv5RjCnbOpM9seexv-tzSl9g-z8YgA2LeC-qbDpwMYn1Rn-WfI2xhj7friFaPPjTnCVffmp2O3Uiu3fBm4d4bzUkyg_Taw2LOOfSD1Des/s1600/20141207_232851.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">II have now started a blanket using hadspun cream shetlan in the warp and hadspun alpaca in the weft. My loom is only 24" so I will weave a double lenght, cut it in half and hoin in the middle.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<br />
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">The green wood with the black clips is my version of a temple because I have -so far- been unable to find one that I could purchase at a reasonable price...</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">This cloak did take some tinkering. </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">In the book it is described as follows:</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">[…]
He pulled open the pack, then whipped out a dark gray cloak. Large
and enveloping, the cloak wasn't constructed from a single piece of
cloth-rather, it was made up of hundreds of long, ribbonlike strips.
They were sown together at the shoulders and across the chest, but
mostly they hung separate from one another, like overlapping
streamers. […]</span></div>
<div class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br />
</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
</div>
<div class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">[…]
“It is colored and constructed to hide you in the mist” [...]</span></div>
<div class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I wanted it made out of a very light material. I tested the overlapping technique on a white sample of synthetic voile.. The sample tended to gather static. It seemed to move by itself which I found was a positive characteristic of this fabric.</span></div>
<div class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I ended up using the same fabric in dark gray.</span></div>
<div class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj2CrrziEIxlTkIFKDTIks9zEpb915-nNgR3KHDgYrQyDp431o7b9oARq06I5xn23KtyiD2xXYXPb0koMI0IgdW0x6AdH1eQIdJp2itcz4qcTLgBOGMahEjkRqzUMUoidvE-dbLxUCsu_g/s1600/20150526_180634.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj2CrrziEIxlTkIFKDTIks9zEpb915-nNgR3KHDgYrQyDp431o7b9oARq06I5xn23KtyiD2xXYXPb0koMI0IgdW0x6AdH1eQIdJp2itcz4qcTLgBOGMahEjkRqzUMUoidvE-dbLxUCsu_g/s320/20150526_180634.jpg" width="240" /></span></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The cloak is made with a number of strips of fabric, each is folded in half and stitched to the neighbouring stripe across shoulders and upper arms. </span></div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I have used a shimmering fabric paint to obtain a mottled effect and so that it will reflect the light in unexpected ways.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I am not sure that these cloaks would be decorated but I used the same tendril design used in Vin's gown on the shoulders of the cloak.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The Cloak is held close by 2 polymer clay buttons painted in metallic acrylic. This s in keeping with the story where no nobleman or woman is supposed to use metal on his or her clothing.</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Before I started this I did not know what a gambeson was supposed to be. </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Turns out that it is a sort of padded tunic used in medieval times uder a coat of mail for protection. </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">It is also used now-a-days by SCA (Society for Creative Anachronism) people</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhE_e4Ezl-GQluhTEXckm5fsW5IzsSg_71O0PleP95WF4oCwRvOKMZIN2SV0eeBNO66T-HQWl1p2PM2LnR4v1HhN9ZdRX-ulcqjxRyt9f1pi3g0UAdr5Iummdjsbta8F3xxRUrZT2p0cw0/s1600/20150528_141350.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhE_e4Ezl-GQluhTEXckm5fsW5IzsSg_71O0PleP95WF4oCwRvOKMZIN2SV0eeBNO66T-HQWl1p2PM2LnR4v1HhN9ZdRX-ulcqjxRyt9f1pi3g0UAdr5Iummdjsbta8F3xxRUrZT2p0cw0/s320/20150528_141350.jpg" width="240" /></span></a></div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I researched a bit and decided to make 2 tunics and sandwich them with synthetic padding. We went for synthetic for ease of washing and because it is lighter in weight. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The main material is upholstery twill linen. </span><br />

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I made a toile and then I made the 2 layers of linen tunic. This was simple enough but the quilting of the many layers was a bit of a nightmare. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">If I ever wanted to make a second one I would make and quilt the separate parts and then stitch them by hand.</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The tunic was made in one piece opened from the wrist to the bottom of the skirt on both sides. <span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">This is one of the dresses I imagine Vin would have worn at the balls. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I made itn as the assignment for the Theatrical Costume Class I completed at the Belfast Metropolitan College.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Reading the book I imagine that the dresses mentioned would be similar to those of the mid 18th century in North America. At the same time those dresses require very large cages and a number of crinolines. Vin doesn't seem to have do undress completely in order to run or jump. My dress is, therefore, less cumbersome.</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I initially considered the possibility of usin the tipe of corsets found in Elisabethan dresses because the corset was described as rigid. The profile was, however, too squared and I decided for a more modern type of corset.</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The decoration is meant to be a reminder of the nature of Vin. As a Mistborn she finds solace in the Mists. The tendrils of mist are made of bias binding tape I made using leftovers of silk from the main dress. The fabric was dyed with acid dyes in darker shades of blue and hand-stitched on the dress. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Other, thinner tendrils are made with a double or single whipped running stitch using hand-spun and had-dyed silk and metallic embroidery thread.</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The original idea was to dye the body of the hamper in lightening shades of blue. I has some success with several fabrics and assumed that I'd be able to do the same here. Dip the end of the fabric and allow the dye to wick up the fabric.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I am not sure whether the problem was the fabric or the dye but the result is less than impressive. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The tentacles have been colored using fabric crayons and stitched on top of the body. </span><br />

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">When making the bags I found that using a piping bag caused the four-water paste to separate in its 2 components (water and flour).</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">To avoid the problem </span><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I purchased a bottle with a very fine applicator.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The flour still attempts to separate from the water but I can shake the bottle every so often to mix the paste again and now it seems to be working OK.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I purchased from <a href="http://www.empressmills.co.uk/acatalog/" target="_blank">Empress Mill</a> at the RDS in Dublin their Egyptian cotton fabric. Some of it was in long strips which I will use for the borders of the new bathroom rugs.</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhXFRdfD3_j4yj3XE1ejvBJ_3Saml7ahyphenhyphenKY4Ty0s4jc1qU4L2bbeZT4ksuQqPdJUlfyhHDN9OhQSSAOX_XXN6ik5E1Mv3ih645nnPZsYdCzy4Df7KOrQub4Lr-TgU_r1l6s2Bdi9ScjMj0/s1600/20140607_120706.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhXFRdfD3_j4yj3XE1ejvBJ_3Saml7ahyphenhyphenKY4Ty0s4jc1qU4L2bbeZT4ksuQqPdJUlfyhHDN9OhQSSAOX_XXN6ik5E1Mv3ih645nnPZsYdCzy4Df7KOrQub4Lr-TgU_r1l6s2Bdi9ScjMj0/s1600/20140607_120706.jpg" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I created the resist design with the applicator bottle and I let the rice flour resist dry for a day. I am not sure whether this is necessary but I like the cracks that form when the resist dries completely. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Using a clean Mr Muscle bottle full of Procion dye solution I sprayed the dye on the fabric.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The main part of the rugs is made of 2 layers of old, scratchy, frayed and thick bath towels.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I cut them to size and joined them using the strips as an edge.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9217654172292557635.post-68849553812473405172014-12-02T15:39:00.000+00:002015-01-06T15:40:06.297+00:00Felt decoration<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I have been trying to find uses for the tissue paper I have spun in the last year. Some of it is in small quantities so I made a small basket.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The basket was crocheted around a length of spun newspaper. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The crochet technique involving crocheting around another thread has a name but I could not remember it. I tried to find it and while looking I found this tutorial: <a href="http://makemydaycreative.com/2013/06/12/crochet-rope-basket/" target="_blank">http://makemydaycreative.com/2013/06/12/crochet-rope-basket/</a></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I made the base crocheting back and forth a few times, I then widened the base increasing at the corners and after 3 rounds I stopped increasing the number of stitches. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I started with a pale yellow and when I ran out of it moved to darker and darker shades.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I am now making a second basket with a narrower base and the same technique.</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">At long last I have put to use the many old t-shirts I had saved in the past few years.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I have removed the seams and with the remaining fabric I made first strips that I then cut in sections of about 12-15 cm by about 5 cm. </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-jndgw4rz-ww/Uf5uUEYvXEI/AAAAAAAABBs/CBzRCwQOxAU/s1600/20130804_160613.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><img alt="t-shirt rug" border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-jndgw4rz-ww/Uf5uUEYvXEI/AAAAAAAABBs/CBzRCwQOxAU/s1600/20130804_160613.jpg" height="240" title="t-shirt rug" width="320" /></span></a></div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I have used an old towel as a base. I drew lines with a sharpie and stitched folded pieces of the t-shirts all along the lines.</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-zUNjwfVc5PA/Uf5uQzLJZQI/AAAAAAAAA_A/4_8oas04yJw/s1600/20130804_140026.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><img alt="sewing t-shirt rug" border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-zUNjwfVc5PA/Uf5uQzLJZQI/AAAAAAAAA_A/4_8oas04yJw/s1600/20130804_140026.jpg" height="320" title="sewing t-shirt rug" width="240" /></span></a></div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The result is a thick nice bath mat. It is on the heavy side and should I do it again I would dye the towels a dark color as the orange sometimes peeks out from the pile.</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The first big bag has simply a large square of rice paste which cracked most attractively especially where the paste was thicker.</span><br />

<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The second bag is a zen tangle. This one gave me some problems. I piped it using baking paper. I broke 2 of the piping bags and one of them "dissolved". I am not sure what caused it, the paste was the right consistency and then became more and more runny until I had to pour it out and add more flour. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>

<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">After it dried I have realized that the initial consistency was to dense. It did not bond with the fabric. If I do this again I'll either wet the fabric first or make the paste runny.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I added gelatin to the paste and I am wondering whether the gelatin melted again with the heat of my hands squeezing the bag? Or maybe I involuntarily pushed the water upwards?</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The last sample was made with a stencil made of fun foam. This would work well as a base for further design.</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">This is a project spanning so many months I cannot even remember when I started it.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Ages ago I purchased in the Texere website a "very fine cotton" not realising that "very fine" equals to "insanely fine" in my classification. </span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhve1B_koa9QY-xo0MCWMVn55Gs38rHiauFHNDyaLSPYFM-8pHWXLIbd5GqZ0orLKarCKXHxwPyqb_E37yNKIvAvnT9XTeiNu6jHAsNJj7uzyO4-5nLMjakXuZRrX7295aNBpGIxuERm9s/s1600/20130427_144046.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" mwa="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhve1B_koa9QY-xo0MCWMVn55Gs38rHiauFHNDyaLSPYFM-8pHWXLIbd5GqZ0orLKarCKXHxwPyqb_E37yNKIvAvnT9XTeiNu6jHAsNJj7uzyO4-5nLMjakXuZRrX7295aNBpGIxuERm9s/s320/20130427_144046.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The thread is soooo thin that I don't have enough heddles to use it by itself. I spent hours winding it into a warp and then I painted it using Procion MX dyes. The weft was died with the same type of dye in a solid turquoise.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I then left it in a bag waiting to be brave enough to warp all the heddles I own.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I am working it as a simple tabby. I should say that I choose this structure to show off the painted warp but actually I know that it is going to be hard enough without adding anything else.</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEijSFuIvlDKWf1fSeaqTvuOaY6m1fcXWtsRUEmHWkCNRsuOQybWBHIAkierz0wNe4BTqvQtOGpnEfAaPaOdTgLIXqLSWi8MR9WqXFyuCmCEf1YsKgVcOANdb0UoFJ-71_yrmwSCqBBPUpc/s1600/20130411_070415.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" dua="true" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEijSFuIvlDKWf1fSeaqTvuOaY6m1fcXWtsRUEmHWkCNRsuOQybWBHIAkierz0wNe4BTqvQtOGpnEfAaPaOdTgLIXqLSWi8MR9WqXFyuCmCEf1YsKgVcOANdb0UoFJ-71_yrmwSCqBBPUpc/s320/20130411_070415.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I found that for some unknown reason one side of the warp is tighter than the other. On top of that, in the middle of the weaving, I had to move house and the castle of my table loom had to be folded. This requires all the tension to be removed from the warp. That -I am afraid- did not help any with the bad tensioning. </span>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9217654172292557635.post-72497948334460207762013-08-21T16:31:00.000+01:002013-08-21T16:31:16.671+01:00Origami wreath<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I followed the directions from this blog post: </span><a href="http://www.michelemademe.com/2012/10/reader-question-how-do-you-make-that.html"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">How do you make that paper sun?</span></a><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"> but made them(yet again) with presents paper I could not bear to part with.</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Arial;">The first attempts were... disappointing.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial;">I had found very little in the way of directions and advice and most of it was for the fancy American-made charkha with ball bearings and all. Mine is Indian made, came wrapped in Sanskrit newsprint (which I have saved for future crafting possibilities).</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial;">I had decided to spin some bamboo fibre that I had dyed and prepared in several punis in gradual colour changes. The fibres are longer than cotton and thus more forgiving of my main sin: insufficient twist.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial;">I decided that by the end of the bamboo I would have learnt how to spin. I did.</span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: center;">

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I have finished spinning the last of the punis and I started spinning a bit of cotton and it looks good and, in fact, much easier than the bamboo.</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I am happy with the result but I know I will not trust to knit it by itself. It could become the weft of a scarf, maybe in satin wave to show off the shininess.</span><br />

<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiAZxEihiS5YQAkz9pQmwGGefOWwCvL24G-DI9UyCXqPtpG4mO2K2Hlc-gV5iI02Fu0iuB0mcz06SVxHboVCrxKU7vVwq68Pcwi8YUxOAYcv6OYNw-nAB20TD6OILuNAbg7KpcybmQzQkM/s1600/20130425_120706.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" mwa="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiAZxEihiS5YQAkz9pQmwGGefOWwCvL24G-DI9UyCXqPtpG4mO2K2Hlc-gV5iI02Fu0iuB0mcz06SVxHboVCrxKU7vVwq68Pcwi8YUxOAYcv6OYNw-nAB20TD6OILuNAbg7KpcybmQzQkM/s320/20130425_120706.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The rose are identical to the one I sent her but I have sealed the paper using Mod Podge. Not sure if they are better or not.</span><br /><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I got the pattern for the roses from the book: Origami Jewellery by Ayako Brodek. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">In the book they are used as earrings or broaches. and they are sealed with polyurethane satin varnish. I did try to find it but in vane. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">In any case, considering the frequency of precipitations I am not sure I want to wear something made of paper. I will probably change my mind in about 10 minutes... Especially because I enjoy the folding but am unable to make for the sake of making. I must have an object. The bookmark.</span><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I have made 2 bookmarks so far. Using all the completed roses I had.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">After folding the 3 parts for each flower I coated each with Mod Podge. </span><br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Arial;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiYEluP2U9rn_o12vassDIBjHM_4IR-6HtRgOKMK-CWeb7jcCVkv3iv5mBIAhEDsvpQ8hK53ItGXphyjeSLVNFyIUqlsamqtXxXczuGd4j_36Nbo8VjaItxnzh_5-ra3Iu4yRArkBfVSfo/s1600/20130425_100349.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" mwa="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiYEluP2U9rn_o12vassDIBjHM_4IR-6HtRgOKMK-CWeb7jcCVkv3iv5mBIAhEDsvpQ8hK53ItGXphyjeSLVNFyIUqlsamqtXxXczuGd4j_36Nbo8VjaItxnzh_5-ra3Iu4yRArkBfVSfo/s320/20130425_100349.jpg" width="240" /></a><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjfsP-O5BngUeTOPJ2w0acCoF4HRG1QUocU3L36OgkEnCsPCMtyN8bYdTleqf3cVIf8CaCJP0OhP4288ydImBJyKh8RWBw5BORoyY9kaLD0U9RQAI1TyqlDlhJiV-Qci7x6VcrwJhu1f24/s1600/20130425_115404.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" mwa="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjfsP-O5BngUeTOPJ2w0acCoF4HRG1QUocU3L36OgkEnCsPCMtyN8bYdTleqf3cVIf8CaCJP0OhP4288ydImBJyKh8RWBw5BORoyY9kaLD0U9RQAI1TyqlDlhJiV-Qci7x6VcrwJhu1f24/s320/20130425_115404.jpg" width="240" /></a></span></div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Then attached the bead that will be the centre of the flower.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">In my previous bookmark I attached the rose to the nylon thread using a bead. Attached the same way as the centre bead but under the rose. This allows to rose to twist around. Attaching the rose directly to the thread works better for me.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
</span><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg11rVgQC2WMJ10JKRhPhNct85xOaK1oNPi8AeA4zIgtEeeeqGij2myT5GjsMY5KXcCq74R84Sg4IeYdhoPL3FGNGzKdkK89R9OSGJK5_WdHFM1oE5E_KN5DsFw2UDEuAbHSjKqfYfdP3M/s1600/20130425_115430.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" mwa="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg11rVgQC2WMJ10JKRhPhNct85xOaK1oNPi8AeA4zIgtEeeeqGij2myT5GjsMY5KXcCq74R84Sg4IeYdhoPL3FGNGzKdkK89R9OSGJK5_WdHFM1oE5E_KN5DsFw2UDEuAbHSjKqfYfdP3M/s320/20130425_115430.jpg" width="240" /></a></span><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I put together the 3 parts using tacky glue. The book calls for mono phase epoxy glue which I have been unable to find.</span><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Initially I was planning to add all 4 roses to the same bookmark but after attacking the fist one (the greenish one) to the thinnest thread I did not want to add anything else. I find it so pretty I might wear it as a necklace. See... I have already changed idea about the jewellery thing.</span><br />
