Bamboo on charkha

A couple of years ago I purchased a charkha wheel as a toy present to me.
The first attempts were... disappointing.
I had found very little in the way of directions and advice and most of it was for the fancy American-made charkha with ball bearings and all. Mine is Indian made, came wrapped in Sanskrit newsprint (which I have saved for future crafting possibilities).
I had decided to spin some bamboo fibre that I had dyed and prepared in several punis in gradual colour changes. The fibres are longer than cotton and thus more forgiving of my main sin: insufficient twist.

I decided that by the end of the bamboo I would have learnt how to spin. I did.

 

I have finished spinning the last of the punis and I started spinning a bit of cotton and it looks good and, in fact, much easier than the bamboo.


All I have to do now is decide what I will do with it.

 

 I am happy with the result but I know I will not trust to knit it by itself. It could become the weft of a scarf, maybe in satin wave to show off the shininess.
Or I could knit it with another thread (for support).

Bamboo

Diversi mesi fa ho comperato 300 g di bamboo presso www.winghamwoolwork.co.uk/ , ma non ho mai avuto il coraggio di filarlo.

Ha un odore strano ed e' lucidissimo. Un lucido diverso da quello della seta: piu' innaturale. Tanto per aggiunger la beffa al danno, ho realizzato che il bamboo e' una fibra vegetale e di conseguenza non puo' essere tinta con le tinture jaquard che uso di solito.
Sto pensando di cominciare a tingere tessuto e il tessuto e' quasi sempre una fibra vegetale: cotone o lino. Sicche' ho acquistato il necessario per tingerlo e recentemente ho cominciato a filarlo.
Il filato che risulta e di un bianco abbagliante e lucidissimo ma il processo per ottenerlo e' lungo e (mi duole dirlo) abbastanza noioso. Le fibre non sono particolarmente lunghe e scivolano. Non posso fare i lunghi e fluidi movimenti che faccio con la lana altrimenti il filo si rompe.
In teoria bisognerebbe cambiare la marcia dell'arcolaio. Riducendo la misura della rotella del filaroio, per ogni giro della ruota grande si ottengono piu' giri e quindi il filo si attorciglia pu' velocemente e dovrebbe intrappolare le scivolose fibre del bamboo.
Non sono sicura del perche' ma non mi trovo bene con le marce alte.
Ho filato circa 200 g finora e adesso mi sono presa una pausa.
Non sono sicura di che cosa faro' con il filato, ho provato un motivo che mi piace ma ci pensero'...
